The final story: What are some life lessons you learned from your partner?

It seems like it was just yesterday when I was reaching out to a handful of blogger friends to start a series to countdown to our fifth wedding anniversary. Back then i thought August would never come around but it's here! And our anniversary is this Saturday!

For the final topic I wanted to invite everyone back who had contributed stories previously to share a little bit about what they learned from their partner -- a life lesson, funny or serious or anything in between.

I believe we all learn from those around us - we pick up on their best habits and become better versions of ourselves. I have most certainly felt this way. As I was putting this post together, I realized all the answers are from women sharing what they learned from their husbands. I wonder what the guys would say they learned from us. Perhaps it's something we can all talk over during dinner tonight.

So here they are -- all the wonderful bloggers sharing their best versions of themselves with the help from the partners in their lives.

As for me, I had this bad habit of quickly showing my annoyance if Yangkyu did something I didn't like. One day he asked me, "Why are you able to snap at me but not at the people who hurt you?" It was during a time in my life when I couldn't stand up for myself, but oddly I was able to say what was on my mind to Yangkyu. I said it was because I felt safe with him, because I didn't really mean harm and because I knew he would understand because he was family. But then I began to see how Yangkyu was with me. He never once showed a hint of annoyance or frustration. He was always calm, laid back, happy and put me above all else. I realized,  this is how we should treat each other. Each and every day. I still struggle {because I can be a hot head sometimes} but I'm trying.

I want to send a special thank you to all the bloggers who shared their stories. It was my first time doing this type of series and collaboration and it has been a wonderful experience. I am thinking of new ways to continue to reach out and create a space for storytelling. I hope to have something similar lined up in the future.

And finally thank you for reading along and sharing your stories in the comments section. This has been such a fun ride. I hope it was the same for you.

This has been a story series counting down to our 5 year wedding anniversary in August. You can read the full series here

  3. Happy anniversary Jane and Yangkyu! It's wonderful to read all the lessons these couples are teaching one another, from laughter to baking to finances. Definitely reminds me that marriage isn't just about love and isn't one dimensional. Also, that real couples are made for one another and help us where our characters are lacking. Beautiful series. Very well done!

  8. Happy Anniversary Jane and Yangkyu! I want a love like everyone here! I find that couples compliment one another. Where one is weak at something another is strong and vice versa. You work together. That's a beautiful thing! I've been unsuccessful finding a love like that. Maybe one day. Lol

  18. A huge HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wish to you and Yangkyu. I love the way you chose to count down to your 5th anniversary with this series. You incorporated others and celebrated their love, too. It's pretty special to say the least.

I'm personally very honored you asked me to be included in this series. To be honest, my relationship and life is very private. As ironic as it is to post online through a blog as seemingly petty as "fashion" I never quite delve into the deeper, darker parts of me. I don't consider the representation of myself online to be false or anything of the sorts but, it is only a partial viewing. As we all know, everyone has their ups and downs. It's so easy to see only what we want to see in life. As I read through this series and the stories other couples share, I am reminded how special everything is in life. The simple things in life are appreciated by people and it's especially made aware if you are fortunate to have someone else in life to express those joys with.

Thanks again and best wishes to you and Yangkyu!!

    xoxo,
    Nancy

  21. I love this and how you laid it out too :) Happy Anniversary for Saturday!! The sentiment I love the most was learning to be more assertive - it's one thing I super admire about my boyfriend and hopefully I've picked up an ounce of how he deals with things when they aren't going right in his life.

  29. Sorry I'm so delayed, I've been really bad at catching up lately. But I am so glad for you, happy anniversary!! I LOVED this series, it was so sweet and wonderful to read. And also the thing you shared in this post about what you learned from Yangkyu really resonated with me because I feel like I've had that exact same conversation with Ilhan. He gets really irritated that I easily snap at him but don't stand up for myself to other people...and I literally have said the exact same thing that you said. But as you said, "their" way is how it should be. Thanks for the reminder!
