A Girl and Her Dog : Maria + Bonnie

Hello!

I mentioned last year as I was closing out 2014 that one of the series I wished to continue was "A Girl and Her Dog" but with a little bit of a twist - featuring women and a variety of different animal companions they have in their lives.

We have a very special duo to get things started this year -- Maria and Bonnie

Bonnie actually just celebrated her 18th birthday {#noteverydaybonnieturns18) a few weeks ago. 18! But don't let her age fool you. While well into her senior stage in life, Bonnie still has a lot of spunk, energy and sweetness that will melt your heart and get you thinking about senior dogs in a different light.

Maria and Bonnie are one of our favorite pals on Instagram and also trusty confidants as well. I had the opportunity to talk with Maria and she shared with me her experiences and tips with kidney disease in dogs, and she also sent us the most heartfelt encouragement as Piri and I maneuver through this illness together.

It takes a very special person to care for animals and a super special person to care for senior pets. Maria embodies all those magnificent qualities. And together with Bonnie they are rewriting the narrative on what life with senior dogs is really like - challenging yet rewarding, a little bit slower but amazingly awesome, definitely fulfilling and lots of fun, too.

Here is all about Maria and Bonnie.

The Girl: Maria F.
The Dog: Bonnie -- Bonnie is a SATO, which is slang for a street dog from Puerto Rico. Satos come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they are usually small to medium sized, short to medium hair, with big ears and slender snouts. It's believed that the majority have terrier in them, reason why they tend to be incredibly smart and quick to learn. We always thought Bonnie had some Shetland sheep dog in her, but a DNA test result reported she is a Coton de Tulear and Schipperke Mix ;-) What we know for sure is that she is our special girl, no matter her breed.
Maria's favorite snack: I don't think I have a favorite snack, what I know is that I prefer salty snacks to sweet snacks.
Bonnie's favorite snack: She used to love carrots and apples. Her absolute favorite were the carrots. I don't give them to her anymore, because she has lost many of her teeth, so it's difficult for her.

Bonnie and I have a special bond. She was born before dawn on a rainy day on my birthday, how can I forget. So I could say she was my birthday gift. That was in Puerto Rico 18 years ago. Wow. A lot has happened since. Including flying her all the way to New Jersey when she was 14. She was the healthiest dog, but her senior years have come with a lot of challenges - thyroid problems, hearing and eye sight problems, surgery at 16 years of age to save her life, her legs don't have the same strength, her kidneys are not working properly since November 2011 and neurological problems since July 2014. Yet through all that her spunky, feisty and playful personality has not changed. Her joyful spirit is completely intact and her will to live never ceases to amaze me. She brightens my day every day and she has taught me a few things about life, like not giving up, being hopeful, staying positive, enjoying each day as it was the last, staying strong and most of all to be happy.  I love her more than anything and we have become even closer in her senior years.

Thank you Maria and Bonnie.
